A batiste (or plain weave) is a narrow, thin ribbon woven with a linen weave. Batiste probably originated in the French town of Cambrai, where it was produced as early as the 13th century. They are characterised by their softness and lightness, and are therefore particularly suitable for summer blouses, dresses, bed linen and other lightweight garments.

The batiste can be used for hemming and mending seams, lacing, tying aprons, loops, backing for tunics or bows for bed linen. Batting is also a great help if you knit or crochet, as it can be used to beautifully reinforce seams so that the knitting doesn't pull out, and the softness of the batting fabric means that the result will be smooth and wrinkle-free. Compared to twills, batiste will be more suitable for sewing as name tags, as the straight weave makes it easier to label.
