Eyelets

Grommets, also known as eyelets or rivet rings, are small metal or plastic rings that are typically used to reinforce holes in materials. Their use is wide-ranging, and they can be found in lace-up boots, sweatshirts, jackets, trousers, curtains and drapes, tents, boat and garden tarpaulins, and banner advertisements.

Choose the appropriate grommets according to the inner diameter. So think in advance how thick a cord (or lace/lanyard/cable/curtain support) you need to pass through the grommet. We also look at the thickness of the material to which we are attaching the grommet and choose the depth (=height) of the grommet (rivet ring) accordingly. The outer diameter gives us an indication of the overall size of the rivet ring, i.e. how large the area to be reinforced is.

In general, the hole in the material should be as large as the hole of the inner diameter of the grommet.

For thin materials, we choose wider grommets (with a larger outer diameter) to avoid tearing the material. For thicker materials (e.g. leather) we can choose smaller grommets.
